Education & Outreach

National Association of Conservation Districts

National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is a non-profit organization that represents the 3,000 Soil & Water Conservation Districts around the country, providing national leadership, and a unified voice for natural resource conservation.

NACD sponsors an annual poster contest for students kindergarten through twelfth grade, providing students with an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water and natural resource issues through art. It also highlights the educational outreach efforts of conservation districts and their state conservation associations, auxiliaries and agencies. This contest is co-sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts and the NACD Auxiliary.

Each year, the poster contest starts at the district level. Individuals and teachers with questions regarding district contests should contact their local district.

District winners advance to the state level. State winners advance to the national contest. National winners are recognized each year at the NACD Annual Meeting.

Natural Resources Conservation Services Conservation Workshop

Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) Conservation Workshop is an overnight summer camp at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Georgia. Each June, the camp hosts Georgia's rising tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders to help educate students on basic principles of resource conservation through class time and field work.

Educational leaders, representatives from natural resource agencies and industry professionals provide students with lectures and hands-on learning to enhance their understanding of Georgia's vital natural resources; their uses in agriculture and industry; and responsibility to conserve and protect them. This workshop gives students a unique, one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about Georgia's soil, water, air, plant, mineral and animal resources from experts in each field.

Students attending the workshop will get a taste of college life while gaining valuable insight into career opportunities through their advisers and instructors, who consist of professional personnel from the various conservation industries. Each year, more than $15,000 in scholarships is awarded to participants.

Cobb SWCD is committed to sponsor two Cobb County students yearly to this excellent experience.

Georgia Envirothon

The Georgia Envirothon provides high school students in Georgia with hands-on, science based training in natural resource and ecology topics in a challenging and competitive atmosphere.

The Georgia Envirothon is an annual competition for high school students. The program consists of one day regional competitions held in March and a two day state competition held in late March or early April. The number of teams participating at regional competitions is unlimited.

The top four scoring teams in each region compete at the state level to represent Georgia at the Canon Envirothon, a five day competition held in July or August.

The Canon Envirothon hosts teams from participating states and Canadian provinces who have won their state or provincial event. Teams at the Canon Envirothon compete for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management.

Cobb SWCD is committed to sponsor one Cobb County Envirothon team yearly.
